A Candid Candidate

I'm not an expert in my field yet, but I'm preparing myself to be one very soon. Part of the doctoral process, and self improvement in general I suppose, is the ability to reflect honestly and have open discussions when needed about those reflections that fall short, feel overwhelming, or are over internalized. I'd like to think when I engage my peers in these conversations about our lives, our processes, and our struggles that it is a candid snapshot into what it means to pursue your Ph.D.

What makes a candid candidate? It goes beyond honesty. It is being able to address the gritty things that show our weaknesses and expose potential validation to our worst fears. It is no longer censoring the indelicate emotions or thoughts. It is throwing off the forced humility to celebrate every tiny step you take and every inch you crawl to graduation. Admittedly, these conversations won't necessarily sound or look like the words of an extremely educated scholar; maybe that is the point.

This blog is not solely about my journey, but yours as well. I seek for us to build a community of support and shared dialog for those who have chosen to take on what seems like an insurmountable task in becoming a certified expert in their field. By no means do any of us have the end all answer to the difficult questions and the trying situations we find ourselves in; but you are not alone and hopefully there is some piece of wisdom or solidarity that can bring you ease.

I'm proud of you for making it this far, keep going.
